SC-1: Exploring Ground Penetrating Radar – Theory, Best Practices, Insights and Examples
Instructors: Kevin O’Hara and Brian Jones, GSSI
Time:  8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Course Description:
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is an electromagnetic imaging technique that allows users to see beneath the surface through soil, pavement, concrete, ice and even water. This one day course will provide: an introduction to the principles of GPR, recommended survey design & scanning techniques, hands-on outdoor data collection, data processing, real-life data examples and Q&A. Popular environmental and engineering applications to be covered include: bedrock & soil profiling, utility mapping, underground storage tank (UST)/ drum detection, concrete investigations, and road & bridge assessment.  Students with any level of GPR knowledge are invited to join, as a broad range of topics will be covered.  Attendees will receive printed handouts of the course material along with a USB stick containing additional materials and relevant research papers. Attendees should come prepared to work outside for several hours and bring a Windows-based laptop to install a free trial version of the most widely used GPR processing software (if interested).

SC-2: WellCAD Geophysical Well Log Presentation & Analysis Software
Instructors:
Taylor Weber and Lia Martinez, Mount Sopris Instrument Company, Inc.
Time:  8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Course Description:
WellCAD is rapidly becoming the standard software for geophysical data presentation in the groundwater, environmental, mining, and engineering industries. This 1‐day short course is designed for any level of WellCAD user.  The class will be broken down into smaller groups with each group focusing on different topics.  Attendees will have the option to rotate between groups to cover topics that are most pertinent to their work.  Some of the topics that will be covered in the class are: NEW features of WellCAD 5.2, custom header design, document formatting, image processing, full waveform sonic processing, etc.  We will have several instructors in the class to help answer questions on any topics you may have.  Attendees must bring their own Windows-based laptops, but the WellCAD licenses will be supplied for the class.

CANCELLED:  SC-3: “3D Hydrogeological modeling”
Instructors: Torben Bach, Geophysicist MSc and Tom Pallesen, Geologist MSc, senior consultants at I-GIS
Course Description:
This introductory, one-day course will focus on providing an overview of the process of building a 3D hydrogeological layer model, from data to final 3D model. Emphasis will be on the considerations in the 3D modeling process, using different kinds of geophysical data, well data, and chemical data in the modeling workflow. Participants will learn through a combination of presentations and “hands on” work in the GeoScene3D software. The course will cover topics such as:

• The modeling workflow, from data to final 3D model.
• Importing and visualizing data, including AEM data, well data, log data, etc.
• Hands on 3D modeling
• Creating snappy 3D visualizations of your models and data.
• Using the final 3D model, e.g. creating magazine specific potentiometric maps.
• Exporting the 3D model for further processing in other software, e.g. modflow and similar.

In addition, we will examine geologic considerations on method resolution and target sensitivity, e.g. when using Airborne Geophysical data in hydrogeological modeling.  Participants will explore and experiment with some of the specialized AEM modeling tools in GeoScene3D. No previous experience with 3D geological modeling, the GeoScene3D software, or geophysical data is required for this course. Participants must have their own Windows PC laptops. Training data, example projects and the GeoScene3D software will be provided before the course, with a complimentary 6-month license.

SC-4: Land and Marine Electrical Resistivity/IP/SP
Presenter:
Jason Greenwood, Advanced Geosciences, Inc.
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Course Description:
This course is designed for professionals who are involved with, or are considering, resistivity, induced polarization (IP) or self-potential (SP) methods. The course will review theory, data acquisition methods, field procedures, quality controls, modeling methods, data presentation and interpretation and ground truthing for a multitude of field environments on land and in marine settings. Data will be processed with EarthImager™ software with 1D, 2D, 3D & 4D data sets requiring data filtering, forward and inverse modeling, 2D and 3D survey design. Case histories will include numerous geotechnical, environmental, and ground water examples as well as towed marine, mixed land and underwater surveys, cross borehole surveys, and time-lapse studies.

SC-5: Utilizing NMR for Groundwater Investigations
Instructor:  Elliot Grunewald, Vista Clara, Inc.
Time:  8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Course Description:

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful technique allowing direct detection of groundwater and determination of subsurface flow and storage parameters. Designed for professionals in research and industry, this course will provide a practical introduction to NMR as a tool for groundwater investigations. The course will begin with an overview of the rock physics linking NMR measurements to hydrogeologic properties such as water content, porosity, pore size, and permeability. Building from laboratory NMR methods, the course will explore the field methods of borehole NMR logging and non-invasive surface NMR. Instruction will focus on the practical considerations of survey design, data processing and quality control, as well as the interpretation of NMR datasets as part of a broader hydrogeologic study. Throughout the course, intuitive case studies will be used to understand how NMR techniques can be used to enhance groundwater research questions and address industry requirements in environmental, water resource, and mining sectors. Participants will also have an opportunity to operate NMR instrumentation and execute processing software workflows.
